Dandruff :
Your skin constantly renews itself; dead cells from the scalp
fall off as new cells form beneath them. Everyone loses skin
cells in this way.
With dandruff the process is faster, so a greater number of
cells are shed. This means the cells shed in clumps (flakes)
that are big enough to be seen by the eye.
Flakes of dandruff are especially visible when they land on
dark clothing. The scalp can also be itchy. The medical name
for dandruff is pityriasis capitis, and it's the most common
condition of the scalp.
Many people think they get dandruff because their scalp is too
dry. They stop washing their hair with shampoo or wash it less
frequently, because they believe it makes the condition worse.
This is not true.
Flaking only happens because of an increased turnover of skin
cells.
Dandruff is believed to be associated with an overgrowth of a
fungus commonly found on the skin and scalp, called
Pityrosporum ovale.
Seborrhoeic
dermatitis
Severe cases of dandruff are caused by a disease called
seborrhoeic eczema or seborrhoeic dermatitis, which causes
greasy bran-like scale.
The seborrhoeic area may also be red and itchy - that's your
eyebrows, ears, scalp, the skin around your nose, the lines on
your cheeks and your torso.
Seborrhoeic dermatitis becomes worse in winter and tends to
improve during the summer when sunlight relieves the symptoms.
It can vary from mild cases, which are only a problem in
winter, to more severe cases where flaking occurs in places
other than just the scalp.
The fungus Pityrosporum ovale is a significant factor in
seborrhoeic dermatitis. Doctors don't know exactly why, but
anti-fungal treatment (ketoconazole shampoo) helps ease the
condition.
Stress and serious illnesses can also cause an increase in the
production of scale.
Why does hair loss
happen?
A certain amount of hair loss is normal – most people lose
between 50 and 100 hairs a day, which fall out naturally to be
replaced by new growth.
But new hair growth slows down as we age, which may lead to
thinning and eventually baldness.
Male pattern baldness, which is hereditary, usually occurs in
middle-aged men but can also affect men in their late teens.
Male hair
loss :
(male pattern baldness/androgenic alopecia)?
Male hair loss is the most common type of hair loss. It is
caused by increased sensitivity to male sex hormones
(androgens) in certain parts of the scalp, and is passed on
from generation to generation.
In the past, baldness was often seen as something unfortunate
or undesirable. However, this attitude has changed over the
years and nowadays a clean-shaven head is usually considered
both fashionable and attractive.
Causes
of male hair loss?
Some men have areas on the scalp that are very sensitive to
the male sex hormones that circulate in men's blood. The
hormones make the hair follicles - from which hair grows -
shrink. Eventually, they become so small that they cannot
replace lost hairs. The follicles are still alive, but are no
longer able to perform their task.
The condition usually starts in men aged 20 to 30 and follows
a typical pattern. First, a receding hairline develops, and
gradually the hair on top of the head also begins to thin.
Eventually, the two balding areas meet to form a typical
U-shape around the back and sides of the head. The hair that
remains is often finer, and does not grow as quickly as it
used to.
Hair loss in women
Women can also suffer hair loss, especially those with many
relatives who are also prone to losing their hair.
The female pattern sets in at a later age than in men and is
usually limited to the top of the head. Total baldness is
rarely seen in women.
